Asked Questions |
1. Are music classes open to all students; even non-music majors?
Yes! We welcome all musicians and offer performance ensembles and private lessons for students at every skill level.
2. Is financial aid available to me as a music student?
Yes. If you audition for a music performance scholarship you are eligible to receive a scholarship
of $1,000 for the first two years at Alma, $1,500 for your third year, and $2,000 for your senior
year. You will be required to perform with one of our ensembles (or study privately in the case of
piano students) in order to maintain your scholarship. You do not have to major in music in order
to be eligible. Also, all students who audition for performance scholarships are eligible to be
considered to compete for one of two scholarships whose awards may equal full tuition less non college
government and private grants and scholarships. This competition is held in the spring. (Please see
Scholarships section of this web page for more information on scholarships and auditions.)
3. Can I graduate from Alma College in 4 years if I major in Music?
Yes, but you should be aware that it takes an ambitious academic schedule to get
a Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree in 4 years. Many students find the
pace more comfortable to complete their course work in 4 years and come back for
an additional term to student teach.
4. Can I get certified to teach both instrumental and vocal music?
Alma College does not provide dual certification because the State of Michigan does
not require teachers to be certified in both areas. Students graduate with certification
to teach music: they may apply for positions in either the instrumental or vocal area.
Students may pursue training in both instrumental and choral pedagogy in order to make
themselves eligible for jobs as band or choir directors.
